The Theory and Driving Test

The Theory Test

The theory test is to test your knowledge of the highway code and your ability to deal with hazards. The test is made up of two parts; multiple choice questions and the hazard perception part. The multiple choice part is delivered using a touch screen computer and the hazard perception part records your response to hazardous situations through the use of a computer mouse. You need to be successful in both parts to pass the test.

You do not need to have passed the theory test to start having driving lessons although you will need to have passed the theory test to book your practical test. Both tests can be booked by us if you would prefer.

The Practical test

The practical test is straightforward and has been designed to see if you:

•  can drive safely

•  know the highway code and can demonstrate this through your driving.

The test will include an eyesight test and you will be examined on your general driving and on two reversing exercises. The test will take about 40 minutes. You will also be asked some vehicle safety check questions that any driver should carry out to make sure a vehicle is safe for use. We would cover this area during the latter part of your training. You would also be given at least one mock test so that you are familiar with the test process and to ensure you are ready to take your driving test.
